POSITION TITLE: Bluebird Box Monitor

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Join a group of citizen scientist volunteers and help monitor nesting sites for breeding birds on the Greenway. There are over 40 nest boxes on the Greenway that are part of a nationwide network called NestWatch. We host breeding bluebirds and nuthatches from March through mid-August. Volunteers will be paired up to check a group of boxes, usually 10 - 15, twice a week. They can work together or split the job and each do their rounds once a week.Data collection forms will be furnished and volunteers will be given access to a Cornell Ornithology Laboratory website to see the results of monitoring activity.

PURPOSE: Monitor birds and nesting sites for activity.

LOCATION: Anne Springs Close Greenway

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 2 hours for each visit. We host breeding Bluebirds from March through August. Volunteers will rotate checking boxes so that each person visits nests 1-2 times a month.

QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers do NOT have to be birding experts. In keeping with Greenway policy, all volunteers must register and be screened before they can volunteer.

TRAINING: Volunteers must attend a 2 hour training session, given at the beginning of each season, or learn "on the job" by riding along with an experienced monitor.

Description

Leroy Springs & Company has been providing recreational and educational opportunities to the communities surrounding Springs Industries facilities for over 60 years. In 1995, the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a 2,100 acre nature preserve in Fort Mill, South Carolina, was dedicated to the public to serve as a natural buffer from urban development and a place for countless activities - from hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, to picnics, kayaking and more.

The land was donated by the children of Anne Springs Close to honor her lifelong commitment to recreation and the environment. The Greenway is a not-for-profit entity which receives no ongoing tax dollars to build, maintain or operate its programs, trails and facilities. Owned and managed by Leroy Springs & Company, the Greenway is funded in part by memberships, program fees and generous donations from individuals and corporations.
