July 4 "Community Picnic in the Park" event

  • Do you want to throw one of the most significant July 4 th celebrations in the region?
  • Do you want to help your family, friends, and neighbors enjoy a free community event where guests can play and learn about US history?
  • Do you have the grit and time to perform one of the most essential responsibilities of the day?

The July 4th Community Picnic in the Park at Valley Forge National Historical Park is an extremely popular and free annual community event that generates thousands of visitors. We are looking for friendly and assertive volunteers to welcome families to the celebration, guide visitors where to drive and park, and provide important event information. Volunteers will be standing outside on pavement. All volunteers (or a group leader) will attend an important orientation. Details forthcoming.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides control of vehicular movement to aid in reducing traffic congestion and parking. Periods of high intensity. Requires the ability to quickly solve problems, remain calm, follow directions, and provide respectful yet assertive instructions to drivers. Unless agreed to in advance, an entire shift will be approximately 9:30am-3:30pm.
Position Qualifications
  • Ability to reliably perform the Position Responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand on hard surfaces (e.g. parking lot) in hot and humid conditions for several hours. [We will provide breaks, refreshments, and any necessary safety equipment.]
  • 18 years or older with a working cell phone.

Mission Statement

The National Park Service was created in the Organic Act of 1916. The new agency's mission as managers of national parks and monuments was clearly stated: "....to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Description

Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army. The park commemorates the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation and honors the ability of citizens to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times!
