Parkway Central Library

The Free Library of Philadelphia seeks enthusiastic tour guides to lead visitors on tours of the Free Library’s flagship branch, the Parkway Central Library. Guides will learn about the the art and architecture of the Parkway Central Library building, highlights from the departments and special collections, and the past, present, and future of the Free Library. Upon completion of training, tour guides will give 2 tours a month, including one weekend shift per month.

Guide trainees will explore all aspects of Parkway Central, shadow a mentor, and practice tours for staff before conducting tours for walk-in visitors at the Parkway Central Library. Tour times are 2 pm Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 am Tuesday and Thursday, 10 am and 2 pm Saturday, or 2 pm the first Sunday of every month, depending on guide availability.

Qualifications:

¨ Interest in architecture and the history of Philadelphia

¨ Outgoing personality, strong verbal communication skills, and energy for giving tours

¨ Ease with library visitors of all ages and backgrounds

¨ A desire to share enthusiasm for the Free Library’s mission to advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity!

From manuscripts of Wilde, Lincoln, Edgar Allen Poe, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, to letters written by Emily Dickinson and John Keats, to first editions of Miguel de Cervantes and Phillis Wheatley, original artwork by Beatrix Potter, Howard Pyle, Kate Greenaway, and NC Wyeth, Elizabethan portrait miniatures, Judaica, ancient Egyptian artifacts, Charles Dickens' desk, and Herman Melville’s bookcase, the Free Library is home to a unique, world-class humanities collection.
