Get items checked in and back out to the shelves! In this position, you're helping assure items are back in our system quickly for other library users. You're also allowing staff to work on additional library services for the public.
Position Overview and Impact:
Assist staff in returning checking books in from both the indoor book drop and over night book drop.
Library staff and public are only able to find the materials they’re looking for if those materials are where they’re supposed to be. This position helps staff and other volunteers get the materials back to their designated locations so the public get to the information they’re looking for quickly.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Unload the indoor book drop and over night book drop and bring materials to check in station.
2. Using a computer, check in library materials.
3. Check returned materials for damage, including missing discs, torn pages, or books in need of repair.
4. Read computer prompts for instructions on library materials on hold for other patrons.
5. Sort materials according to library section so staff and volunteers can put in order and re-shelve items.
Qualifications:
Must be able to bend and lift books out off book drop bin. Must be able to utilize a computer to scan a barcode and follow computer prompts for items on hold. Must be able to visually inspect each item for damage including torn or marked in pages, stains, missing discs, etc. Must be able to follow instruction of library staff and follow procedures. Must maintain library patron confidentiality.

Training and Support Provided:
Library staff will train on our computer system. During first several volunteer sessions, staff will work directly with volunteer and address any areas of concern. During all volunteer sessions thereafter, any staff member can assist with questions as needed. For damaged or uncertain items, there is a bin of uncertainty that staff will review. Volunteers will not be responsible for addressing patron issues with damaged items, only responsible for inspecting items and putting them into the bin for staff to review.
Time Commitment:
At least one hour per week.
Length of Commitment:
Minimum 6 months
