NAVIGATORS Helping refugee parents navigate the U.S. education system Refugee children have to be enrolled in school within 30 days of coming to the US. However, their parents are often confused about how our education system works, and the children often do not have the verbal skills to explain it to them. Most refugee parents have no context for terms like: P.T.A., Parent-Teacher conferences, Guidance Counselor, etc. After attending a training with our Coordinator or Refugee Resettlement about the expectations and the kinds of questions the parents are likely to have, the volunteers will be assigned to a refugee family. They will arrange to meet with the family, at which time they will explain the basics of the school system, list parents’ rights, as well as define unfamiliar terms. This meeting can occur in the family’s home, or at Catholic Charities’ offices during business hours. If necessary, Catholic Charities can provide someone to translate if the family’s English skills are too rudimentary for the conversation.
Training will be held June 10th, 2017 from 9am - 11am at our office. If you have any questions/concerns please feel free to reach out to us!
