City Tour Guide

Hostelling International Santa Monica

Overview: Local volunteers offer a unique insider’s perspective to our hostel guests. Tour guides will lead a tour of one part Los Angeles on a pre-planned route (which you are welcomed to update) with historical, cultural, or fun information.
Volunteers will meet the group at the hostel and take the bus to the starting location (volunteer bus fares are paid for).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a group of hostellers on a local area walking tour.

  • Speak about specific points of interest.

  • Research and develop (add to) historical and culturally accurate script.


Qualifications: No experience necessary. We can train you to lead the tours and provide the route information and talking points!

Downtown Tour
We are seeking volunteers to lead at least 1 or 2 tours a month of Downtown Los Angeles. Downtown is an up and coming, yet culturally significant area of Los Angeles that most tourists will never get to see without a tour like this. You will gather guests at the Hostel and head downtown via the Big Blue Bus or Expo Line. Once there, you will provide a nice walking tour of many of the important sites of the area including: Disney Concert Hall, Olvera Street, Grand Central Market, Angel's Flight and more. Route and talking points provided.

  • Total walking distance: about 4+ miles
  • Total time: about 5+ hours


Venice Beach Tour
We are seeking volunteers to lead at least 1 or 2 tours a month for the Venice Beach tour. You will gather guests at the Hostel, take them to Venice and walk down the strip with them while providing information for them on such things as: Muscle Beach, the art walls and the skate park. You will end at Abbot Kinney Blvd and direct guests to nearby eateries, the beach, or how to return to the hostel. Route and talking points provided.

  • Total walking distance: about 3 miles.
  • Total time: about 3 hours

Malibu Tour
We are seeking volunteers to lead 1 or 2 tours a month to Malibu from May - August. You will gather guests at the Hostel and take the bus to Malibu various parts of Malibu. You will take them to: Malibu Pier, Zuma Beach and the Malibu Country Mart. Route and talking points provided.

  • Total time: depends on you and the group, usually 5+ hours


Santa Monica Tour
We are seeking volunteers to lead at least 1-2 tours a month in Santa Monica. You'll walk along the boardwalk and Main Street talking about the city's history, it's environmental initiatives and fun local facts. Route and talking points provided.

  • Total walking distance: about 2 miles
  • Total time: about 2 hours
