ORGANIZATION: ROOTS Young Adult Shelter

ROOTS Young Adult Shelter

ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is located in the University District. With 45 beds, we are the largest overnight shelter for young adults, ages 18-25, in Washington. We are open 365 nights a year with the help of our neighbors.

Every morning we serve breakfast and start the day with alongside our guests with the help of our Breakfast Crew and Morning floor volunteers. Making sure that these young adults are able to start their day with a meal after a nights rest is an important part of our mission to provide vital resources and treat with dignity this often overlooked population.

We could not operate without the help of our amazing volunteers. We have many volunteer opportunities that allow for flexible scheduling. Join us in our support of the young people experiencing homelessness in Seattle.

Morning Volunteer Opportunities:

Our Breakfast Crew is a team of 3 or 4 volunteers who work together to make magic happen in our kitchen every morning. We encourage our kitchen team to get creative with the food we have or food that they bring in. Breakfast crew is cooking, serving up food and cleaning up the kitchen from 6:15am until 8:30am every day except Saturday. On Saturdays, Breakfast Crew starts at 6:45am and works until 9:00 am. Giving back to the community with food that we prepare in our kitchen is something that we can only do with the help of our Breakfast Crew.

The Morning Floor team is a group of volunteers who work together to provide a safe space for guests both physically and emotionally. They are a vitally important part of making sure that the guests we work with have a successful start to their day. Morning Floor shifts start at 6:45am and go until 8:30 every day except Saturday. On Saturdays, Morning Floor starts at 7:15 and goes until 9:30 am. Our Morning Floor team engages with guests while helping distribute hygiene supplies, cleaning up the shelter, and enforcing program rules. After guests leave, volunteers help restock hygiene supplies, prepare bedding for the next night, and assist with any other clean up. While we are starting the day, our Morning Floor team makes connections with our community members, brightening the shelter with the friendships made with guests and fellow volunteers.

Mission Statement

ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is a University District organization based in compassion and committed to social justice that fosters change and empowers human potential by providing critical services to street-involved, homeless, and other low-income persons and through supporting service providers and faith communities in creating a comprehensive network.
