Our Emergency Sanctuary is a safe place for children to land when they have just come into foster care. They stay with us for up to 72 hours and in that time our staff and volunteers ensure they feel safe, welcome, and important. Each shift at the Sanctuary is different; you could spend your shift rocking a baby to sleep, playing dress up, coloring, going to the park, going on fields trips, accompanying kids to the doctors, and so much more.

With the support of paid staff, direct care volunteers are primarily focused on providing supportive, compassionate care through play, meal preparation, field trips, and assistance with daily living requirements. They assist in ensuring that the children at the Sanctuary are cared for and engaged in appropriate recreational activities. Duties may include direct care of children, preparing meals, tidying up, and otherwise helping to keep the Sanctuary Program running smoothly.

Volunteers are provided with training and support needed to succeed in this role. We have a fairly extensive onboarding process, but our Volunteer Manager is here to help you through it! The Emergency Sanctuary experience is such a fulfilling role to give your time to, we hope you choose to join the Amara Family.
