ORGANIZATION: Integrated Learning Experiences Central America

The Organization strives to help improve the quality of life of handicapped individuals and their families in the area of Tecpan with physiotherapy, training and educational therapy. In many Maya communities, people with disabilities are locked in their houses and are seen as bringing shame to their families. The foundation tries to remove that stigma and to train family members on properly helping the patient in with his/her disability. The foundation also creates awareness in the local community to better understand the needs of its handicapped members as well as give opportunities for them to better integrate in to the day-to-day life with the least number of challenges. With the help of staff and volunteers the foundation also trains low-income families to better understand specific types of disabilities and maximize the development of handicapped individuals. Patients receive diagnosis, treatment, training and follow up specific to their disability.

Mission Statement

Design, Management, and Evaluation of Development Projects INLEXCA´s mission is to strengthen human resources in Central America through volunteer programs, educational tours and internships. Our office was set up by former Peace Corps staff in Guatemala in 2005, who wanted to provide flexible programs that would allow prospective volunteers to choose how long they wanted to volunteer for and in what area they wanted to focus on. This flexibility allows our participants the option to commit for as long as they want, unlike other programs that required one or two year commitments. We do this because we believe in the principle that every volunteer can make a difference, no matter how long they volunteer for, together, we can help communities grow and become stronger.

Description

INLEXCA was founded on the principle that volunteers can change the world.

We identify areas of need and projects that would benefit from the input of great individuals willing to give a little of their time to help others. Thanks to your help whole communities can benefit from your time here. Central America is a place where your time as a volunteer is much needed and appreciated.
