ORGANIZATION: A Window Between Worlds (AWBW)

  • 4 people are interested

A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using art as a healing tool to empower and transform individuals and communities impacted by violence and trauma.

We envision a world where safety and hope replace violene, silence and shame: where art is a catalyst to release trauma, build resilience and ignite social change to end domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and intimate partner violence. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for an internship in Venice, CA.

Founded in 1991, when a Los Angeles artist brought art workshops and training to 32 domestic violence shelters across the nation, AWBW has grown to reach over 45,000 participants annually at 150 sites throughout Los Angeles and in 31 states nationwide. Through intensive hands-on training, art supplies, and an online curriculum with 300 workshops searchable by age-level, art supply and emotional theme, AWBW builds the capacity of shelters by training shelter staff to lead weekly art workshops that assist survivors in handling anger, rebuilding self-confidence, and learning positive coping skills. Through art, survivors discover a safe outlet to release pain and reclaim their sense of hope and vision to build a new future.

Mission Statement

To empower individuals and communities impacted by violence and trauma through a transformative healing arts program.

Description

Seven out of 10 people experience some form of trauma in their lifetimes, and the A Window Between Words (AWBW) arts program is a powerful way to process and cope with these experiences. Creating art can be a catalyst to release trauma, build resilience and ignite social change. It allows for self-expression without the need for words, and often participants gain insights into their lives during AWBW workshops, as well as find new ways to communicate and connect with themselves and others. Since its founding in 1991, more than a quarter million adults and children have participated in AWBW art workshops. To provide these workshops to the community, AWBW collaborates with over 200 shelters, outreach centers, schools and other organizations across the country.
