If you are looking for a looking for a way to brighten the day of over 1,000 kids, all before work on a Monday morning, this is a volunteer opportunity for you.

Making History on the Common is a phenomenal and well-loved field trip for Boston Public Schools 3rd through 5th grade students. It is always on the first Monday in June, and it is organized by the nonprofit Friends of the Public Garden.

The field trip takes place between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM (if you are interested in volunteering at the event itself, let me know - we do have some needs during the event!), and we have extra amounts of set-up needs this year. It's a great opportunity for people working in downtown/Beacon Hill/Back Bay to add a little volunteering to their morning, before work.

A number of the tasks involve moving large quantities of items, but there are a variety of opportunities:

  • unpacking apples delivered by WholeFoods
  • moving crates of single-serve beverages from our office onto the Common (across an intersection and about 50 yards)
  • moving buckets of single-serve crackers from our office onto the Common (across an intersection and about 50 yards)
  • Arranging all these food items on our tables
  • Arranging blue flags on the Common to show students where the original shoreline of Boston used to be
  • Setting up chairs and tables and tableclothes at the various booths on the Common

Even a half-hour's worth of help will make a difference for our event. Please RSVP today, and tell your friends!

About Friends of the Public Garden

Location:

69 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Friends of the Public Garden is to preserve, protect and enhance the Boston Common, the Public Garden and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in collaboration with the City of Boston Parks and Recreation department.

Description

The Friends preserve, protect and enhance the three parks by performing vital tree care, planting trees, restoring statues, replacing benches and advocating for appropriate use. The Parks Department does all that it can to maintain these properties but will never have the resources to meet their full needs or to bring about dramatic quality improvements and enhancements.

The Friends also sponsor special educational programs and events for the community, like the Annual Duckling Day parade on Mother's Day, Making History on the Common and a Summer Party.

A recent project of the Friends was the renovation of the Brewer Fountain Plaza and surrounding parkland on Boston Common. The Friends renovated the fountain's setting from the crest of the hill below the State House to Tremont Street. A special granite plaza now surrounds the fountain. The area has 10% more green with 43 new trees and improved grass areas. From April to October, the plaza is adorned with tables and chairs, umbrellas, a "reading room", a piano at lunchtime, and improved food options for visitors.

We have created a fountain setting which is a popular destination for people wanting to meet for lunch or just to retreat from the busy streets of Boston

during the day and evening, protected from the street by lush tree plantings. Adding to that is the beautiful view of the State House which combines to change this place, once avoided, into one of the most memorable and popular outdoor gathering places in Boston.
