SUMMARY
The Wednesday Night Dinner Volunteer offers a much needed break to our community DV victims by donating, preparing and serving dinner on Wednesday evenings for the community support group. Volunteers can do this alone, or with the help of their friends, family or colleagues that they recruit to help. This opportunity is essential for creating a welcoming atmosphere for community members and their children who are seeking support. It is a great way to serve in an informal, friendly atmosphere.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan out, prepare, deliver and serve dinner to 25 adults and children
- This includes providing any paper goods (plates, bowls, napkins, cups, utensils) required for serving your meal.
- Submit a criminal history background check for each person that will be on site (at least one week before the date you are serving). Those with felonies, crimes against a person, or crimes of ethics should self-select out of this opportunity.
- Following the evening timeline:
- 4pm - Volunteers arrive and set up already prepared meal
- 5pm - Clients arrive and dinner begins
- 5:30pm - Dinner ends, clean up begins
- 5:35pm - All dinner items have been removed from Sunshine Hall
- 6pm or earlier - All left overs and supplies have been put away, and kitchen cleaned
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to organize a group (no larger than 6 people) to come together to make and serve dinner for 15-20 people
- Demonstration of flexibility in serving dinner to a rapidly changing group size
- Strictly adhering to the confidentiality and safety needs of clients
- A commitment to helping staff create a safe, warm and welcoming space for clients before they embark on hard self-work during their support group that directly follows dinner
- Sensitivity to and awareness of issues faced by domestic violence survivors
- A compassionate, non-judgmental, proactive attitude
- Ability to work effectively with diverse people
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to speak effectively with diverse people
- Commitment to YWCA vision, mission and values
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
No prior experience necessary. Training will be provided.
COMMITMENT
This opportunity occurs on the fifth Wednesday of each month from 4-6 PM. YWCA requires volunteers to commit to at least six consecutive months in this position.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Acceptable Washington State Patrol Criminal History Record
- All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older
- Must complete DV101 training within first 6 months of volunteering
