World Relief is now seeking applicants for a 10 ½ -month AmeriCorps service member to serve September/October 2017 - July/August 2018.

Member Reports to: Resettlement Support Manager

Overview:

The AmeriCorps Employment Specialist will serve recently arrived refugees by assisting in or teaching two weekly employment preparation classes, assisting in multi-level English language classes (including pre-literate students), supporting volunteer recruitment, training and management, and assisting with other job preparation services. The AmeriCorps member will serve refugees from many different ethnicities alongside an experienced English teaching professional, the Volunteer Coordinator and skilled Job Developers.

Qualifications:

• A desire to serve refugees in support of the overall mission and operations of World Relief
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and sensitively with people from diverse cultures and religious backgrounds
• Prior teaching or tutoring experience desirable, especially in multi-cultural environments
• Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple duties
• Flexibility, initiative, and a desire to learn
• Experience working or volunteering with refugees and/or non-native English speakers very helpful
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Knowledge of a second language a plus
• Intermediate computer knowledge, including MS Office
• U.S. citizen, U.S. national or Permanent Resident
• High School diploma or GED, undergraduate degree preferred

Essential Functions May Include:

• Assist in or teach weekly employment preparation classes
• Teach or assist weekly vocationally-specific employment workshops
• Coordinate Community Speaker Project
• Assist in a multi-level English language class one to four times per week to adult refugees, particularly focusing on supporting clients at Level 0 - Level 2
• Coordinate volunteer opportunities for adult refugee job seekers
• Support the volunteer program by assisting with recruitment, management and training of volunteers
• Assist Job Developers with job readiness activities and job training workshops
• Maintain and update student information in an organized and confidential manner, including assessments, progress reviews, and attendance records
• Develop new tools, trainings, and materials that support the English, Volunteer, and Employment programs, enhancing opportunities for refugee adults to be better equipped for employment success

The AmeriCorps Individual Placement is a 10 ½ -month national service program requiring 40 hours a week, 1,700 total hours of volunteer service. Members receive a monthly stipend of $ 1,202.86 before deductions and withholding, basic health coverage, valuable training and experience, a $ 5,815 education award issued at completion of service, forbearance for qualified student loans, payment of interest on qualified student loans in forbearance, and childcare assistance for eligible members. This position is contingent on funding.
