OVERVIEW: STEAM Educator (Volunteer/Unpaid)

As a STEAM Educator you will work with groups of high school aged girls in order to serve as a "real-world" guide and coach to assist in teaching the students as well as act as a mentor to the girls within the Girls Who Code club.

Volunteer Responsibilities and Suggested Activities
  • · Assist coding instructor within a classroom setting and within small groups
  • · Work one-to-one with students who might be struggling with coding concepts
  • · Research and develop supplemental materials to assist students with comprehension of all coding concepts
  • · Assist with assessing student projects and offering suggestions and useful solutions when students struggle with concepts or project development
  • · Assist students with time management techniques and tips to ensure success in completing program and juggling other responsibilities
  • · Share work experiences with students
  • · Assist students with career pathway advice and help direct students towards resources to help with career advancement

Minimum Requirements
  • · Professional currently or formerly working within the IT industry with knowledge of coding or student who might be taking related coursework
  • · Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • · Passionate about mentoring youth/young adults who are interested in coding careers
  • · Sensitive to diverse populations

TERMS: Minimum of 4 hours per week for the duration of program. Schedule is flexible and dependent upon volunteer’s availability. Must be willing to participate in a background check.

STEAM Educator will report directly to the Program Manager for the Girls Who Code Program and work collaboratively with all staff, partner sites, volunteers and the public.
