About Aspire! Afterschool Learning

Location:

909 S. Dinwiddie St., Arlington, VA 22204, US

Mission Statement

Aspire! Afterschool was founded in 1994 as Greenbrier Learning Center at the request of parents, teachers, and community members seeking after school tutoring and enrichment activities for the children of south Arlington. The Arlington Community Foundation, the Greenbrier Baptist Church, and several local corporations partnered to create GLC, a non-sectarian independent 501(c)3 organization.

Description

Aspire! Afterschool Learning goals are:

  • to improve students' reading skills.
  • to bolster students' overall academic achievement.
  • to foster students social emotional development and ability to make good choices.
  • to improve students' homework grades.
  • to support parents' involvement in their children's education.

Aspire! achieves these goals through its two programs, the Learning ROCKS! Afterschool program and the Parent and Community Outreach Program.

Learning ROCKS! is Aspire!'s flagship program, providing year-round academic achievement and enrichment opportunities to children in grades 3-5 at three locations: Arlington Mill, Buchanan Gardens, and Virginia Gardens. Learning ROCKS! is supported by the Learning Links AmeriCorps Program where AmeriCorps Members provide a critical link across three main aspects of a child's day: at school, after school, and in the community. Learning ROCKS! focuses on four themes: Literacy (Reading, Rockin, and Writing), Community and Culture (Out of this World), Healthy Lifestyles (Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise), and Life Skills (Got skills?)
