Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage them and encourage their progress on a project.

Volunteer Role: Writing coach
Overview: First-graders read Julia Sarcone-Roach’s Subway Story to learn about subways and what happens to them when they’re no longer useful as transportation. To help them synthesize the concept of sustainability, and appreciate how one thing can be turned into another that's equally useful, students will embark on a writing project to imagine how they might repurpose a subway car. They’ll also create art to complement their writing.
