ORGANIZATION: Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity

Volunteer Service Description:

Volunteers will work alongside a specific ABWK staff member and homeowners to paint and repair of all kinds of homes for low-income families. ABWK will focus on interior work November through March, and exterior work April through October.

Volunteer Impact:

Construction Volunteers are essential in order to help TCHFH achieve its mission. Those who participate in the repair of a home play a part in providing the opportunity for an existing homeowner family to maintain a decent and affordable place to call home. By becoming a Brushmaster you make a long-term commitment to many repair projects and become a valuable leader in the repair program.

Skill Qualifications:

Please have some experience with homebuilding or home repair. A minimum of 24 hours of construction work in the last month is recommended.

Age Requirements:

For safety reasons, children under the age of 16 are not allowed on site. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have adult supervision from a parent or adult friend. Youth ages 16-17 are required to have one adult over the age of 21 accompany them. There can be one adult for every four youth.

Time and Mobility Commitment

It is requested that Brushmasters make a commitment of 3 or more days per week for at least 3 weeks. Volunteers must work on site for the entire workday. The workday generally runs from 9:00am - 4:00pm. Repair projects are likewise scattered across the Twin Cities metro area, and volunteers should be able to travel* to any of these locations.

Scheduling, Supervision, and Training:

Scheduling, supervision, and repair training will occur on site in a hands-on fashion under the supervision of the A Brush With Kindness Site Supervisor.

Mission Statement

To eliminate poverty housing from the Twin Cities area and to make decent, affordable shelter for all people a matter of conscience.

Description

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with families who demonstrate need and willingness to work with Habitat for Humanity by helping to construct their own housing. With a safe, decent and affordable home to call their own, families are then free to concentrate on parenting, employment, education and community engagement. Each Habitat build provides a setting for people from all walks of life to work side by side in partnership with future homeowners--finding common ground as they create quality, affordable housing.

Twin Cities Habitat relies on volunteer labor and tax deductible contributions of cash, materials, professional services and property to build simple, decent homes with low-incomes families. Working under the principle that no profit should be gained from assisting those in need, Habitat for Humanity charges no interest on the mortgages that it issues to homebuyers. In operation since 1985, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity has built more than 650 homes in the seven-county metro area.

We manage additional homeownership preservation programs that help low-income families keep their homes. The Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program offers assistance to residents of Minneapolis, providing intensive in-person counseling, phone counseling and referrals, negotiation with lenders, and financial assistance. A Brush With Kindness is a neighborhood outreach program offering painting, landscaping, and minor repairs to homes for qualifying low-income homeowners.
