ORGANIZATION: Gompers

Do you have a passion for writing and storytelling? Do you believe every person has a valuable perspective and experience to share? Do you want to use your creativity to improve Phoenix and build your professional portfolio? We want to hear from you.

Gompers is seeking one to two Content & Social Media volunteers to help build our agency-wide stories bank. You’ll pitch ideas, report and write original stories, and engage our social media audience in discussions that matter to our Phoenix community. You’ll gain hands-on experience in writing, editing, content creation, blog management, social media, project management, and non-profit communications, and you’ll build an impressive professional portfolio for your next job interview.

Key Talents

You’re proud of your ability to write prose that captivates, entertains, and educates. Classmates, coworkers, and friends see you as thoughtful, inquisitive, and hard-working. You have a reporter’s mind-you can quickly learn new topics, find the story in everyday situations, ask questions that encourage interviewees to open up, and write with the reader in mind. You’re eager to contribute your ideas and experience to one of Phoenix's largest, most respected disabilities agencies.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Development Officer, we are looking for people who can help us with ANY of the duties below.

  • Help develop the blog’s editorial calendar and project management system to guide stories from concept to completion
  • Write and edit stories for Gompers' agency blog (located on Medium)
  • Create visual assets, including photos, video, and graphics, to accompany stories
  • Create social media content to engage our audience and promote blog posts
  • Monitor blog and social media performance and suggest changes to posts’ format and content
  • Identify and build relationships with guest bloggers
  • Moderate blog comments and inquiries
  • Attend events, conduct interviews, and collaborate with Gompers clients, volunteers, donors, and staff to further the agency’s story banking initiative.

How to Get Started
Please e-mail a cover letter, resume, and writing sample (max. 500 words) to Austin Hodges Pierce at apierce@gompers.org.

About Gompers
For nearly 70 years, Gompers has served people with disabilities in the Phoenix metro area with a holistic focus on the needs of the individual. As a core value, Gompers recognizes and celebrates that each person brings a unique set of abilities, skill sets and potential to our organization. The result is that Gompers’ daily environment is rich with insight, humor, humility, compassion and genuine caring about the needs of others. Today, Gompers remains a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and Executive Director Mark Jacoby. Our programs have expanded to include three campuses, one in Phoenix, one in Glendale and our newest in Peoria. Of the $7M annual budget, approximately 80% is reimbursed through government funding with the remainder raised primarily through contracts and charitable donations. Gompers serves students and adults ranging in age from five to 85 through GPS, our K-12 special education school, a Day Training for Adults program and our Employment Services job training and employment placement program.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1947, Gompers’ mission centers on developing innovative opportunities for people with disabilities. With a main campus in Phoenix and an employment services office in Glendale, our nonprofit organization serves over 500 adults and students with developmental disabilities in Phoenix and its surrounding communities.

Description

We are a leading provider in the valley of innovative learning techniques for individuals with complex developmental disabilities. Through our focus on the use of assistive technology(AT) in all aspects of our programming our goal is to unlock possibilities which lead to major social and emotional milestones. AT has the potential to increase self-esteem, happiness, self confidence, and an overall sense of power and control over one's own life. Everyday activities that once seemed out of reach ultimately become activities they are now able to engage in.

In each of our programs, we provide comprehensive curriculum that integrates the uses of assistive technology to enhance learning. Our programs include:

Gompers Private School which provides students ages 5 to 22 with individualized academic, behavioral, therapeutic and vocational programs to maximize skills and increase independence.

Day Training for Adults (DTA) program serves individuals who require support in developing and maintaining life skill. The program is built around community integration and self-determination.

Employment Services program offers one of the finest employment readiness programs for individuals with disabilities in the metro area. Three separate programs allow members to progress in their job skills training with the ultimate goal of independent and competitive employment.
