Summer Learning Institute Volunteers will work with the summer camp teachers by assisting with the camp kids, 4-12 years old. Volunteers will assist in projects, various classroom tasks, helping children with their projects, and supervision. Volunteers should be be between the ages of 14-18. The hours are extremely flexible and based off when the volunteer is available to assist. This position is only needed during the summer and will end on August 4th. Location: Daytona Beach.

Mission Statement

The basic purposes of the Museum are:

1. To render educational and cultural services to the local community, the region, and the State of Florida, through collection, conservation, presentation and interpretation of original and significant objects which are important components of the artistic, scientific and historical legacy of our multicultural and multi-ethnic society.

2. To achieve this mission of developing, building, and maintaining multinational and multidisciplinary collections, exhibitions, research and teaching facilities within the scope of the Museum, namely he broad areas of art, science and history, with particular emphasis on Florida history; and to initiate, exhibit and promote, alone or in conjunction with other other museums or educational institutions, programs for bringing about a better understanding and appreciation of the world in which we live.

3. To discharge the Museum's obligation and responsibility to its community by ensuring that these facilities and capabilities are available to all, and by presenting them in a unique manner that is not duplicated by other area resources.

This statement was approved by the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Board of Trustees, November 21, 1996.

Description

Type of Institution: Museum of Arts & Sciences and Center for Florida History with planetarium and nature center. Extensive permanent collections, educational programs including publications, and changing exhibitions

Collections: American Arts, Cuban, African, English and Continental, Chinese, Pre-Columbian, paintings, works of decorative arts, works on paper, fossil and marine mollusks, crystals, gems and minerals, complete Giant Ground Sloth more than 16,000 planetarium slides, Florida hist items including maps, letters, Spanish colonial items, photographs, historic buildings and contents in St. Augustine and Gamble Place in Port Orange, 12,000 Root collection of Americana, Coco-Cola and railroad items, 10,750 volume library and 90 acre Tuscawilla Preserve and Education Complex.

Education Programs: MOAS is an adjunct classroom under contact with Volusia County to provide curriculum related tours and programs to school children. It extends these services to public, private and home school children in a six-county area.
