OMSI Shift Captain Volunteer - Pompeii Exhibit

OMSI Shift Captain Volunteers serve as the liaison between Volunteer Services, Guest Services and Guest Services Volunteers for major exhibits. During Summer 2017, OMSI will host a major exhibit, Pompeii (June 24 to October 22). Guest Services Volunteers welcome visitors to OMSI and provide them with friendly and helpful service as they enter and navigate through this major exhibit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Check in Guest Services volunteers as they arrive at the shift meeting prior to their shift, and assign them to roles based on their experience, abilities, and preferences.
- In cooperation with Volunteer Services, provide an update on any procedural changes that may have occurred since volunteers’ last shifts.
- Ensure that new volunteers on your shift are trained and knowledgeable about their roles.
- Provide radio training to volunteers on your shift as needed.
- Directly supervise volunteers during your shift, checking in with each one regularly.
- Rotate or reassign volunteers during their shift to a different role as needed, and ensure that volunteers get a break when possible.
- Create a fun environment!
- At the beginning of the first shift of the day, obtain radios from charging stations and distribute to assigned volunteers. At the end of the last shift of the day, retrieve radios from volunteers and return them to their charging stations.
- Complete Shift Report Forms at the end of each shift and submit to Volunteer Services.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong leadership, supervisory and problem solving skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- General familiarity with OMSI policies and procedures, the layout of the building, and the staff working in your areas of responsibility.
- Ability to multi-task.
