Qualified board members sought for small nonprofit offering English Language teacher education

The School of Teaching ESL, a Washington nonprofit since 1985, is an adult education program that provides English language teacher training and credentials (TESOL certificate, ELL endorsement). The organization is looking for qualified candidates for up to two positions on its Board of Directors.

The Board is composed of individuals who have relevant experience in the administration of ESL programs (IEPs, ABE/ESL programs, K-12 education) the areas of finance (accounting, bookkeeping), law (contracts and human resources), and marketing. Currently, the school is looking for people who have specific experience and knowledge in either or both of the following areas:

  • The K-12 arena as it relates to ELL programs, the ELL teaching market in the Puget Sound Region, and preferred qualifications for teachers working with English Language Learners.
  • Marketing and promotion. Specific knowledge of marketing and promoting teacher education programs is preferred, but not necessarily required. Candidates with marketing backgrounds and a passion for education are encouraged to apply.

BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILTIES

The Board of Directors meets quarterly and the estimated quarterly time commitment is 6-8 hours. Board members:

  • Support and contribute to the school’s mission
  • Attend quarterly Board Meetings at The School of Teaching ESL in North Seattle. Meetings are generally held in the late afternoon/evening on a weekday and generally run about 2-3 hours.
  • Support and advise the school’s Executive Director
  • Conduct the Executive Director’s end-of-year performance review
  • Commit to a one- or two-year term

Description

The School of Teaching ESL has been focused on providing the best TESOL instruction and training in the Puget Sound Region for over 30 years. In collaboration with Seattle Pacific University, We offer a range of programs, courses, and study formats leading to recognized teaching credentials, such as TESOL Certificates (entry-level and advanced), ELL and Bilingual Endorsements (must be a licensed WA State teacher), and a graduate track credit option for those wishing to complete MA-TESOL and MA Teaching degrees at SPU. This unique relationship with an accredited university is really what sets S-TESL apart from other TESOL training programs.
