The WGBH FUNFEST, a day of ice cream and music, returns Saturday, July 15 from 10am-4pm at WGBH Studios in Brighton. This fun-filled community event will feature ice cream from some of your favorite local vendors and live music performances by family-friendly artists. Kids will have the chance to play carnival games, jump in moon bounces, get their face painted, and interact with some of their favorite PBS characters!

Volunteering during FUNFEST is a great way to get involved in the community and support your local public media station!

Please review all FUNFEST volunteer position descriptions below email Volunteer Coordinator, Jaime Reese at jaime_reese@wgbh.org if you would like to help. Interested candidates should include the following information in their email response:

  • Full name
  • Preferred shift: There are FOUR shifts to choose from
    • Set-up day: Friday, July 14 from 2-7pm
    • Event day: Saturday, July 15 (9am-1pm, 12:30pm-5pm, or 9am-5pm)
  • Top 3 preferred volunteer positions, in order of preference (for event day only)

Admission Volunteer:

Sell FUNFEST tickets, check names off RSVP list; collect email ticket receipts and groupons; and help with line management.

Admission Line Hospitality:

Help manage admission lines. Offer free ice cream and water to those waiting in line. Distribute event maps and point guests in the right direction.

Community Ambassador:

Promote WGBH Membership. Answer questions and provide directions for guests.

Concession Stand Volunteer:

Help with food and beverage sales at the concession stand. A WGBH Employee will handle the cash. Volunteers will pop popcorn, make cotton candy, etc.

Costume Character Volunteer:

Pose with kids for pictures in 30-minute intervals. Please remember that characters do not speak - you will have a handler assigned to you, ensuring that you are safe and can navigate through crowds. This year’s characters include:

  • Clifford (5'4" and 5'9", women's size 6-14 or men’s waist size 28-40)
  • Super Why (5"6" to 5'8", medium build)
  • Word Girl (5'5" to 5'8", thin to medium build)
  • Curious George (5’1"-5’3", average build)

Costume Handler Volunteer: (must be 18+ years of age)

Ensure your assigned character is safe and can navigate through the crowds at FUNFEST. Keep track of time so the costume character is not walking around outside for more than 30 minutes. If the character volunteer is tired or needs a break, please escort them back inside to the respective green room/break area to take off the suit. Answer basic questions event-goers might have about the character and their appearance schedule during the course of the day.

Costume Line Manager:

Help manage lines of people waiting to see costume characters.

Entrance/Newbury Comics Gate Volunteer:

Stand at gate directing guests to enter through main entrance; answer questions.

Exit Volunteer:

Provide directions to parking garage if needed. Stamp guests who would like to re-enter later in the day.

Face Painting Volunteer:

Paint designs from the suggested list provided by Events Team.

Food Truck Line Manager:

Help manage food truck lines.

Freezer Truck Runner:

Make sure ice cream is going to the correct vendor table. **Volunteers should be

able to comfortably lift 30-40 pounds if necessary.

Ice Cream Scooper:

Place 3 oz. portion sizes of ice cream in serving cups. All scoopers will help keep the area neat and clean.

Merchandise Assistant:

Provide excellent customer service to our guests as they shop for event keepsakes.

Moon Bounce Patrol:

Help maintain moon bounce order; group kids by age to ensure safety; manage line; and keep track of jump time to keep line moving.

Parking Volunteer:

Stand by event entrance and wave to traffic on One Guest Street; direct cars inside garage for event parking and answer questions for guests.

Kids Coloring Station Volunteer:

Keep coloring area tidy; encourage kids to draw; and hang up artwork.

Kids Activity Station Volunteer:

Work at the Kids Activity Station, assisting with games like Ring Toss and Golf Putting. Provide guests with game instructions; help manage line and distribute prizes.

Volunteer Photographer:

Take pictures of Main Stage performances, guests posing with costume characters and rove around event venue to capture various FUNFEST activities.


Volunteer Photographer’s Assistant:

Ensure parents sign legal forms when their child is being photographed with costume characters. Assistants must also take down each child’s description (i.e. curly brown hair, blue shirt and tan shorts) to match the photo to paperwork. Also ensure adults completing the forms has list a legible email address and their contact information.


Water Cooler Volunteer:

Refill water jugs; replenish cup supply; make sure guests know water is available.


Food Sampler:

Distribute food and beverage samples to event guests.
