Ohio Village Volunteer
Summary:
From Memorial Day to Labor Day volunteers at Ohio Village have the unique opportunity to get hands on with history and make history come alive for visitors! There are multiple types of volunteer opportunities during the Ohio Village Season. These are wonderful opportunities for students, teachers, retirees and anybody who is passionate about history!
Roles & Responsibilities:
T-shirt Volunteers: These volunteer help facilitate activities & games, programs and interpretation in the Ohio Village buildings.
3 rd Person Costumed Volunteers: Become an Ohio Village citizen! Volunteers can be 3rd person costumed, meaning they get all the fun of the costume by demonstrating and interpreting information about the 1890’s but do not need to develop a historic character.
1 st Person Interpreters: Help history come alive by becoming a citizen of Ohio Village! 1st person volunteers create a character and spend the day living like its 1898! They engage and immerse the visitor in "life" as they live it getting the visitor to help with chores, engage in conversation, and more. Volunteers are to complete a 1st person class series of 6-7 evening classes.
This is an excellent chance to make history come alive and help visitors interact with history in a way that is not possible in a traditional museum atmosphere like entertainment such as checkers, nine pins, or other outdoor/indoor games. With 20 buildings to choose from the opportunities for interpretation are endless. Volunteers must be able to interact with all ages.
Time Commitment:
Flexible shifts and breaks. This position calls for summer availability any day between Wed-Sun, Memorial Day - Labor Day, for at least one ½ day shift per week. Additional opportunities are available year-round after a full season in Ohio Village.
Work Environment:
Volunteer may encounter large crowds in the Ohio Village buildings. These roles may involve working in inclement weather in the summer. Most positions are within village buildings but walking in the elements is required to get to the buildings. Volunteers may also encounter downtime on certain days with less visitors.
Physical Demands:
This opportunity involves persistent standing, walking, and some sitting, bending and light lifting.
