East Side Learning Center (ESLC) is a year-round program working with diverse children in grades preK-2 who are reading below grade level. Volunteers will tutor the same child(ren) one-on-one each week using lessons prepared by ESLC staff. One-on-one tutoring shifts are 45 minutes each and tutors are expected to volunteer for at least one shift a week, but most tutor for a couple hours once or twice a week. Tutoring this summer is from June 19 -August 4, Monday through Friday. The first four week session will be at John A Johnson Elementary from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm and the second three week session will be at Community of Peace Academy from 9:00 am to 11:30 am- both in St. Paul. Tutors can volunteer at one or both sites this summer. Free background checks and new tutor orientation are provided. ESLC also offers specialized internships and projects in various fields.

Mission Statement
"Unlocking each child's potential through the foundation of reading."
Description
East Side Learning Center (ESLC) strives to be a major force in "unlocking each child’s potential through the foundation of reading." ESLC does this by providing year-round, personalized, one-on-one reading tutoring at no cost to families for nearly 350 St. Paul children (K-3) who read below grade level and do not have the resources to get help elsewhere. The students we serve reflect the vast economic and culturally diversity on the east side of St. Paul with most of our children coming from families that live at or below the poverty line and do not speak English as their first language. ESLC was founded in 2001 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in response to a request by the civic leaders of St. Paul to form an educational partnership. Our vision is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to read at grade level by the 4th grade.
