4H Youth Garden Coordinator Volunteer

Key Duties/Responsibilities:
The Youth Garden Coordinator Volunteer will collaborate with the 4H volunteer leader and adults at Chance Academy to help the students plan, build, and maintain their garden. The students want to grow crops that can be used to make a product (basil or peppers for hot sauce).
The volunteer will teach youth and adults at the school about planting in raised beds and maintaining the garden. The goal is that the youth will ultimately be able to take over of the garden maintenance.
Qualifications:
- Experience and knowledge regarding urban agriculture, community gardening, and leading youth/school groups
- Interest in working with youth and patience with high energy children
- Ability to following standard operating procedures
Physical/Age Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must undergo a background check
- Comfortable working with youth groups
- Comfortable working outside during the summer
- Has reliable form of transportation to the different sites
Locations:
- The Chance Academy garden is located directly across from Howard School of Divinity - 2900 Van Ness St NW, Washington, DC 20008
- Chance Academy is housed inside of Michigan Park Christian Church - 1600 Taylor Street NE, Washington DC 20017
(Time spent equally between both locations)
This is an ongoing commitment - approx. 2 hours/week. The 4-H youth group meets every Friday, but the volunteer will work with the 4H volunteer leader and the Center Director when needed. Meetings between volunteer and school adults can be conducted over phone/video after first three meetings.
