Children's Calendar

Background: Since 2002, MAP has published the International Children’s Mangrove Art Calendar to engage with kids from all over the world. In 2017, children from 12 nations entered our contest by answering a simple, but intriguing question: "What do the mangroves mean to my community and myself?" See a link to the project here: http://mangroveactionproject.org/childrens-calendar/

The calendar is an educational tool and an important part of MAP’s outreach programs, and in order to expand this outreach as well as leverage the calendar as a better fundraising tool, we need assistance soliciting sponsorships to help cover printing and shipping costs, and potentially as a major source of fundraising from larger companies.

Goals: To secure sponsorship for the Children’s Art Calendar, at minimum covering the costs of printing and shipping, but with the goal of expanding general fundraising from sponsors looking to support a worthwhile cause. Provide the volunteer/intern with marketing and outreach experience.

Reporting and Collaboration: The volunteer/intern will report to the Calendar Coordinator, Monica Quarto. Key collaborators include the Co-Executive directors in Port Angeles and Seattle, international staff, and the Visual Media Designer.

Responsibilities: Complete weekly and monthly tasks assigned by the Calendar Coordinator or Co-Director. Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and improving past sponsorship package
  • Researching potential sponsors (local Seattle companies, larger companies/corporations, Rotary or Lions clubs, etc) and developing a list of contacts
  • Developing a communications plan for contacting and following up with potential sponsors
  • Assisting the Calendar Coordinator as needed

Skills and Abilities:

Required:

  • Communication - Possess excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills. Able to employ technology such as Vertical Response (or similar email systems like Constant Contact and MailChimp), social media platforms, etc. Comfortable speaking on the phone.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint, Project and Excel
  • Organization - Able to track tasks and project, organize and revise data, schedule appointments, and complete project tasks per predetermined deadlines. Able to adapt to shifting priorities and manage multiple deadlines
  • Collaboration - Able to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals of varying positions and ages located internationally.
  • Motivation - Able to work both independently and with a team, and able to problem-solve and propose solutions to staff and other volunteers.
  • Marketing/Sales - Have experience with sales pitches, communicating with vendors, and designing marketing/sponsorship campaigns.

Desired:

  • Familiarity with mangroves, international conservation and tropical ecosystems
  • Enjoys art, especially encouraging children’s art
  • Experience with project management
  • Familiar with local Seattle businesses
  • Willingness to propose new ideas, systems, or tools to the staff

Location: Portions of this position can be completed remotely; however, it is desired that the volunteer/intern will work at the MAP office in Seattle 1-2 days a week. Hours and schedule will be predetermined by the volunteer/intern and Calendar Coordinator at the start of the commitment.

Mission Statement

Partner with mangrove forest communities, grassroots NGOs, researchers, and local governments to conserve and restore mangrove forests and related coastal ecosystems, while promoting community-based sustainable management of coastal resources.

Description

The Mangrove Action Project is an international NGO focused on conserving and restoring mangrove forests around the world. Mangrove forests are among the most biodiverse habitats on earth. They are also among the most efficient absorbers of carbon and they protect coastal communities from hurricanes and tsunamis. But the world has already lost half its mangrove forests.

Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world’s mangrove forest wetlands and their associated coastal ecosystems, the founders of the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the problems of mangrove loss worldwide. MAP’s pro-active approach to long-term mangrove conservation involves: education, advocacy, collaboration, conservation and restoration, as well as sustainable community-based development.

One of the major contributors to mangrove loss is industrial shrimp farming in the developing world. The high demand for cheap farmed shrimp is stripping mangrove forests from our coasts. Most people are simply unaware of this connection, so the Mangrove Action Project has launched the "Question Your Shrimp" campaign which allows consumers to make informed decisions about what they eat.
