About Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids

Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) specializes in designing and implementing school vegetable gardening programs that are integrated into the Delaware science curriculum. Our Education Cultivation program allows every student from kindergarten-fifth grade in a school of approximately 600 students to engage in hands-on gardening activities. Growing cool weather and fast-growing crops, students are able to experience "seed to table" growing each spring and fall. Over the course of approximately two growing seasons, teachers are trained in our garden curriculum and are able to continue the program with support from HFHK for seasons to come.

We are the state leader in school garden programs, and our vision is to inspire and motivate youth to experience the joy of growing, cooking, and eating garden fresh vegetables. In fact , we are the only organization in Delaware that has implemented multiple hands-on and curriculum-based vegetable gardening programs. Currently, our Education Cultivation program is implemented in over 25 schools and serves more than 10,000 Delaware public school students per year. Board Member and Committee Volunteer Openings

Our board is currently looking to grow and expand HFHK and take our school garden program to the next level! We are seeking board members and volunteers interested in fundraising, networking, public relations, and strategic planning to help us achieve our vision of having a garden in every school in Delaware. Board meetings are the 4 th Tuesday of every month from 5:30-7:30pm in Newark, Delaware. Committee meeting dates/times vary and are coordinated based on the schedule of committee members.

Join us in our efforts to teach kids that vegetables can be delicious! Please contact Lindsay Lancaster, llancaster@healthyfoodsforhealthykids.org if you are interested in board or volunteer opportunities and would like to learn more about HFHK

Description

Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) is the only Delaware organization that works with schools to design and implement vegetable gardening programs that engage EVERY child in a school in two "seed-to table" growing seasons each year. Our model makes it possible and practical for schools to integrate vegetable gardening into the school day and academic year, and to strengthen science education while promoting student health. As a result, we are "The First State School Garden Experts," serving more than 10,000 students at 28 schools (26 public and two private, mostly K-5). Outcome goals for our students include increased agricultural and environmental literacy, enhanced understanding of the importance of vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and better understanding of essential science concepts. Our long term goal is to provide garden-based educational programs for every interested school in our state.
