Harvest Party

We organize 75+ events in and around the city in the summer and fall where people come together to harvest fruit. One of the most important decisions that we make leading up to each event, is which fruit trees we’re going to pick....

What do Fruit Monitors do?
Fruit Monitors are liaisons between PFTP and our registered fruit tree owners. They check out registered fruit trees close to optimal ripeness, and report back on key information from that "site visit." Based on that info, we are able to decide if, and when we can harvest the tree(s) in question at an event. Generally speaking, Fruit Monitors commit to...

  • Attending a training in July (Date TBD) if this is your first year
  • Volunteering up to an hour a week for most weeks from late July through October for an average of 13 site visits.
  • Responding within 1-2 business days of emails from our Harvest Dept asking if you can do a particular site visit (ripeness and events are time-sensitive so quick communication is important)

No prior experience is necessary! PFTP will provide all of the training and resources to make you feel confident and knowledgeable as you increase your knowledge of fruit trees and our fair city through these various site visits.

Sounds great! How do I become a Fruit Monitor?

Mission Statement

PFTP's mission is to increase equitable access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce. We envision joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well-being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate.

Description

Portland Fruit Tree Project is a grassroots organization that provides a community-based solution to a critical and growing need in Portland and beyond: access to healthy food and the benefits provided by trees including cleaner air, shade, and food. By empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of urban fruit trees, we are preventing waste, building community knowledge and resources, and creating sustainable ways to obtain healthy, locally-grown food.

We believe that fruit trees can be powerful tools to build a better Portland Metro area, and that our programming can be replicated in other regions.
