Harvest Party

We organize 75+ events in and around the city in the summer and fall where people come together to harvest fruit. Most events are open to the public. We usually pick fruit in the yards of Portlanders and at our five community orchards. with a dozen participants and 2+ Harvest Leaders in attendance.

What do Harvest Leaders do?
Harvests Leaders are captains of the fruit harvesting ship! You and a co-leader will lead 4-5 harvests between late June and mid-November. PFTP provides all of the training and resources to make you feel confident and knowledgeable, including a training specifically for first-time Harvest Leaders in June. No prior experience is necessary!

You’ll get experience in public speaking, teamwork, group facilitation and more as you spearhead the following harvest event elements:

  • Driving or co-piloting a PFTP vehicle to/from our office.
  • Welcoming fruit pickers at the harvest event.
  • Introducing pickers and showing them how to pick and sort fruit.
  • Harvesting and sorting fruit (of course!)
  • Weighing and donating harvested fruit (we donate 50% or more!)
  • Unloading/loading tools from the PFTP truck.

Fill out this online application by following the link below by Sunday, June 25th.

Mission Statement

PFTP's mission is to increase equitable access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce. We envision joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well-being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate.

Description

Portland Fruit Tree Project is a grassroots organization that provides a community-based solution to a critical and growing need in Portland and beyond: access to healthy food and the benefits provided by trees including cleaner air, shade, and food. By empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of urban fruit trees, we are preventing waste, building community knowledge and resources, and creating sustainable ways to obtain healthy, locally-grown food.

We believe that fruit trees can be powerful tools to build a better Portland Metro area, and that our programming can be replicated in other regions.
