ORGANIZATION: One Cool Earth (OCE)

Purpose:

One Cool Earth and SLO county public schools seek a

motivated volunteer to work cohesively with students

and assist a garden educator to support lessons in school

gardens and outdoor classrooms. The position would be

after school and is well-suited for parents or relatives

with a student at the local school. Help power happy,

healthy, smart youth in the garden by volunteering

today!

Location(s):

➢ Public schools in Paso Robles in Atascadero

Key Responsibilities:

➢ Support garden educator with lessons in the garden:

○ Set up for lessons and activities

○ Assist with supervising and educating children during garden activities

○ Clean up after lessons

➢ Share enthusiasm as well as knowledge with others in outdoor classrooms

Time Requirements/ Frequency:

➢ 1-2 hour intervals (weekdays after school)

Qualifications and Requirements:

➢ Gardening knowledge and classroom experience preferred, though neither is

required!!

➢ Provide one’s own transportation to and from the site

➢ 18 years and older or with parents permission

➢ Volunteer Paperwork and fingerprinting with school site will need to be completed

Benefits:

➢ Leadership experience, public school experience, and expertise in or familiarity with

garden education.

Training:

➢ 1 hour orientation

Description

We are looking for volunteers in the following areas and more!

1. Site Selection: We elect to work at school sites based on site need and willingness to

create, utilize and maintain outdoor classrooms.

2. Planning: We listen to school site stakeholders to create goals for the outdoor classroom,

assessing community, student, and school site interests, needs and resources.

3. Development and Construction: We draw upon community assets to build programming

and facilities that serve the unique needs of each site.

4. Maintenance and Operation: While we ultimately hope to support the self­-sufficiency of the

school sites we work with, we are committed to providing long­term technical assistance,

volunteer coordination, and grant­writing for our sites..
