IYLI’s Mission is to nurture a new generation of visionary leaders from the African Diaspora who, inspired by their rich African heritage, are committed to leave a legacy in the world.

IYLI provides a vehicle for helping youth to assess the factors contributing to the under-development of communities of color and for using that knowledge to respond to our challenges proactively, strategically and rationally with compassion, understanding, commitment and determination. IYLI emphasizes the connections between local and global conditions, challenges and opportunities. IYLI conducts seminars at New York University that focus on critical global issues and that provide opportunities for students to interact with professionals working in a variety of international and policy areas. IYLI also sponsors overseas academic study programs in Africa and Latin America that include intensive language study, meetings with government and non-government agencies, research projects, community service and seminars based on the IYLI curriculum.

Volunteers are needed for:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SATURDAY SEMINARS

1. Plan seminars on timely and interesting topics: identify & contact presenters

2. Plan and coordinate activities/outings

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE

1. Help students identify and develop placements in community organizations

2. Check in with students and placement sites to support a positive experience

FUNDRAISING

1. Help students become confident fundraisers; develop and carry out fundraising plans

2. Work with Parents on fundraising

MARKETING, PUBLICITY AND OUTREACH

1. Support the production of a monthly newsletter

2. Manage the newsletter mailing list

SOCIAL MEDIA

1. Maintain IYLI activity in Twitter and Facebook

2. Work with IYLI Fellows who are doing a CSDP to maintain IYLI activity in Twitter and Facebook

3.Research organizations for student recruitment, to market IYLI programs, develop partnerships, sponsorships for Fellow scholarships

4. Work with students and volunteers to sustain a dynamic presence on social media

ADMINISTRATION

1. Schedule activities

2. Grow IYLI's active database

3. Generate statistics on program impact

Mission Statement

The International Youth Leadership Institute (IYLI), founded in 1989, nurtures a new generation of visionary leaders from the African Diaspora who, inspired by their rich African heritage, are committed to leaving a legacy in the world.

Description

Major Activities. IYLI sponsors the Seminars Program to help students to examine local problems in the context of global issues and challenges. Students also commit to engaging in community service. Through the Community Service and Development Program, they develop their leadership skills, gain first-hand knowledge of important social and economic issues, and provide a valuable service to New York City, community-based organizations. IYLI's Winter Institute provides study opportunities in the Caribbean and Latin America. Winter Institutes have been held in Cuba, St. Eustatius, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Dominican Republic. The four-week Summer Fellowship Program enables students to investigate in-depth critical global issues in another country (based on the summer curriculum), strengthen understanding of students' own and other cultures, develop and use foreign language skills, learn first-hand about international-related careers and engage in community ethnographic projects to build their research and team working skills. Programs have been conducted in Ethiopia (2013); Ghana (1994); Senegal/Gambia (1991; 1993; 2001; 2009; 2013; 2014); Egypt (1990; 1992; 1995; 1999; 2000); Spain/Morocco (1996); South Africa (1997); Israel (1992); and Mexico (1998).
