Work, With A Side of ADVENTURE

As you experience life in a remote tribal community and explore Tanzania’s scenery and wildlife, it is difficult not to fall in love with the country and its people.

Mungere Village is nestled in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, a short distance from Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti Plains and other unique destinations.

Travel further from the village to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro or relax on the beaches of Zanzibar Island.

About Red Sweater Project

Location:

1000 SW Forest Meadows Way, Lake Oswego, OR 97034, US

Mission Statement

Red Sweater Project collaborates with local communities to create affordable, accessible and advanced educational opportunities for children in rural Tanzania.

AFFORDABLE

The average family income in rural Tanzania is roughly US $200 per year, while average secondary school and boarding school fees are $500. Over 90% of families cannot afford boarding schools, but they can pay $20 per year to send their child to an affordable school like Mungere Secondary.

ACCESSIBLE

Tanzania is suffering from a shortage of teachers and schools, and children living in rural areas must travel long distances or attend expensive boarding schools. Red Sweater Project operates schools within villages, providing education and health services within the community.

ADVANCED

Education is about more than test scores - it's about critical thinking, innovation and solutions. By creating educational institutions that utilize renewable energy to power computers and provide access the internet, we equip each child with skills that lead to success in a 21st century world. Courses in business development encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, while vocational courses develop real-life skills that lead to employment and self-sufficiency.

Description

Before 2012, Mungere Village had three primary schools and no secondary school. This dearth of educational opportunities prevented its children from advancing in education without traveling long distances.

With the support of foundations, investors and local stakeholders, The Mungere School opened its doors in September 2012, allowing students to dream of an education beyond the 6th grade level for the first time. A focus on sustainable infrastructure, the school has its own water provision and storage site and has plans to be powered exclusively by renewable solar energy and educate 250 students each school year.

Red Sweater Project supports gender parity and works with tribal women's groups to achieve those goals. The organization also collaborates with village elders and government officials, to help the students of Mungere seamlessly transition from primary to secondary school. Through entrepreneurial ventures and social business enterprises, The Mungere School will be a financially solvent institution.
