Educational Justice, an award-winning nonprofit from Louisville, Kentucky, is shaking up the traditional honors society model by inviting our best and brightest high school students to be a part of the movement to end educational inequity. Educational Justice Activists , the organization's flagship initiative, identifies and trains these high-achieving students to become dedicated academic coaches for underserved 5th-8th grade students. After having been paired through an innovative software solution, students meet for one-on-one tutoring sessions at public, pre-approved sites every week, for the entire school year, and up to four years. The concept behind the program, which recently won a social entrepreneurship conference at Harvard University, is encapsulated in this brief video: EducationalJustice.org/EJA . Currently in its second year, there are 127 EJ Activists , representing 28 Louisville High Schools, striving to bring back the promise of American education.
On May 20th, Educational Justice will be hosting its End of Year Graduation and Awards Ceremony at Central High School, from 2-4pm. We are looking for volunteers to help assist us in setting up the event, greeting families and checking them in, setting up food during the ceremony, and breaking down at the close. Volunteers will work from 1-5pm and will receive food as well. Please contact: Michael@educationaljustice.org

Mission Statement
Recognizing that substantially fewer educational opportunities are available to students of low socioeconomic status than to their more privileged peers, Educational Justice endeavors to innovate and implement practical solutions aimed at closing the opportunity gap in education. Using these solutions, Educational Justice strives not only to expand the equalizing power of education to underserved students and their families, but also to end educational inequity by creating and inspiring a new generation of zealous advocates for social justice.
Description
Under the Non-Profit organization Educational Justice, EJ Activists is an initiative to close the educational opportunity gap between students of low socioeconomic status and their more privileged peers.
We tackle the educational inequity ravaging our communities by tapping into an existing resource: we organize and direct the efforts of exceptional high school students, allowing them to pass on their knowledge and skills by tutoring younger peers preparing to enter high school.
The Educational Justice Activists program invites high school juniors and seniors to apply to serve as tutors for low-income middle school students. Applicants are selected based on academic credentials and, if accepted, become activists for educational equity. These students, called EJ Activists, then create a profile via the EJ web application that includes a photo, background, interests, and regular tutoring availability. Supervisors in local middle schools and community centers identify low-income students in grades 5-8 needing academic support. These students are called EJ Achievers. Each EJ Achiever enrolled is able to browse through the database of Activist profiles to select one to be his/her dedicated tutor for hour-long sessions every week for up to four years.
