Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage them and encourage their progress on a project.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Inwood. To sign up, please contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code:

Overview: Selina Alko’s The Case for Loving, about the landmark Supreme Court decision that invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage, is the basis for fourth-graders to study how laws have changed to better protect human rights, and determine if current laws are adequate. To reinforce their research, students will visit the United Nations to be introduced to the Security Council’s work promoting human rights. Coaches will guide them in writing about what they’ve learned.
