Most young people between the ages of 18-21 live with and depend on guidance from their parents or other trusted adults to help them in the transition from teenager to adulthood. However, some young people who are in foster care are discharged when they turn 18, often without a place to live, a job, or the education needed to get a job, and with no plan in place or supportive adults to help them. Many of them wind up homeless and/or imprisoned within a couple of years.

FYI Community Partnership helps young people successfully transition from foster care to independent adults who are able to contribute to society. Our Bridge to Independence initiative provides transitional housing and supportive services that allow young people to make the gradual transition to adulthood. We realize that it is essential to address the needs of young people in the areas of education, employment, housing, health insurance, adult connections and other supports to help them succeed. FYICP and Camelot Community Care provide a supportive team to plan and put these critical supports in place to become successful, well adjusted adults.

Become a caring mentor for a young adult who is aging out of foster care . Our mentors perform home inspections daily to make sure the homes are neat and tidy; however, most importantly, they provide a nurturing ear, valuable guidance, and life skills assistance. Volunteers must be able to meet with the young adult on at least two days weekly, for about 30 minutes per day, either at our Community Resource Center or in the young adult's apartment. Evening, weekend, as well as daytime arrangements are possible.
