2019 Barnstormers Tour
Be a docent for a day at an historic barn.

If you like barns and want to learn more about agricultural history, become a tour guide for this popular annual event - The Barnstormers Tour. We train all docents during one a training session leading up to the event. This is a great experience: volunteers will meet many people and enjoy sharing the knowledge of Frederick's agricultural history. Docents are stationed at particular barns and greet visitors as they go to each barn on the tour. Training starts soon. Email us!

Mission Statement

Frederick County Landmarks Foundation owns and operates Schifferstadt Museum while also promoting preservation of historic sites, structures, and natural landmarks of Frederick County, Maryland. We strive to increase knowledge of early Frederick history and appreciation of local historic sites.

Description

Schifferstadt Architectural Museum, circa. 1758, is the one of the oldest and most historic buildings in the City of Frederick, Maryland, built at the beginning of the French and Indian War. It is among the best examples of early Colonial German Architecture in the country.
Joseph Brunner, a German immigrant from the village of Klein Schifferstadt , purchased 303 acres in 1746, cleared and farmed the land, and built a modest wood structure for his family home. He named his farm Schifferstadt after his hometown in the Palatinate region of South Western Germany. Joseph's youngest son, Elias Brunner, bought the farm from his father and built the stone farmhouse in 1758 that we know today as Schifferstadt. Although its exterior and interior have been altered over the years, Schifferstadt maintains many original architectural features.
