Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll support them and encourage their progress on a project.
This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Inwood. To sign up, please contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code:
Program 984MK-V
Date: Thursday, May 18th, 2017
Time: 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach
About the workshop: Fourth-graders read Michelle Knudsen’s Argus, the story of Sally and the egg she hatches for a science class project. Argus is not a chick-he’s green and scaly with yellow eyes-but Sally learns to appreciate what makes him unique. Writing coaches will guide small groups editing their personal narratives about something different or unique about themselves that they’ve come to celebrate.
