Call A Ride (CAR) is the Council on Aging of Buncombe County's volunteer transportation service that provides rides to seniors who can no longer drive or use public or community transportation (Mountain Mobility, ART, R.I.D.E.).
The majority of CAR clients need the personalized service CAR can provide. It is a tremendous relief to our clients to have somewhere to turn when they can no longer use their vehicles. We are a society dependent on our cars, and we take them for granted, not thinking twice when we need to go to the store to get a gallon of milk or take a last-minute appointment at the doctor's office. But, when we lose the ability to safely drive ourselves, we lose our independence and can become isolated and homebound.
CAR Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport folks, primarily, to their medical appointments or other necessary appointments. Grocery store and other shopping trips are also available. We also take seniors to the polls to vote or for special group outings at the Asheville City Market, thrift stores and Free First days at the Asheville Art Museum.
The service is coordinated through Google Docs for a high level of volunteer flexibility. Volunteers have 24-hour access to the schedule of requests and use the same document for monthly reporting.
The Council on Aging does not charge clients for this service but will accept donations. We also reimburse our volunteer drivers for their mileage.
