Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Biscayne National Park

  • 1 person is interested

The Fish and Wildlife Inventory and Monitoring Program is looking for volunteers to assist in their annual White-Crowned Pigeon (WCP) surveys which take place from May through August. This work consists of counting WCPs as they return to one of the Arsenicker Keys for a ~2 hour survey period. Volunteers do NOT need to operate the boat (unless they are MOCC certified). Similarly, volunteers do NOT need to have birding experience or expertise, as the task is pretty simple and only involves looking at one particular type of bird. We need one or two volunteers for each date listed below. May: 8, 9, 23, 24 June: 1, 12, 22, 23 July: 6, 7, 21, 24 Aug: 4, 7 For each day, volunteers must arrive at Convoy Point by 7:45am and be ready to depart Convoy Point no later than 8am. Volunteers can plan on being back at park headquarters before noon. The volunteer should wear lightweight clothes, a hat, and sunglasses and pack food and drinks to last the morning. We can provide binoculars and sunscreen.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Vanessa McDonough at vanessa_mcdonough@nps.gov and indicate which date(s) you wish to volunteer, if you are MOCC certified, and the best phone number to reach you in the event of a last-minute weather cancellation. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Must be 16yrs+.
