The capacity-building goals for our VISTA project:

1) build a solid, sustainable afterschool volunteer management system; 2); expand afterschool programs to at least one other TCHDC housing community; and 3) engage parents in afterschool programs.

Examples of VISTA member activities:

Goal 1

* Identify what volunteers need to succeed? What supports exist? What is lacking?

* Develop a volunteer management manual and outreach/recruitment plan.

* Launch a social media platform for TCHDC volunteers.

* Plan and execute fall and spring volunteer recognition events.

Goal 2

* Assess properties’ capacity for and interest in hosting afterschool programs.

* Assess technology, mobility, and material needs for remote, mobile programming.

* Develop and implement afterschool pilot for a new housing site.

Goal 3

* Develop and host series of small parent/caregiver focus groups.

* Engage in door-to-door outreach throughout the year.

* Develop linguistically and culturally appropriate communication tools.

Description

Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation (TCHDC) is a not-for-profit developer (with 501c3 status) and owner of affordable rental housing for families in the eleven-county metro area of the Twin Cities - Minnesota.

Since the early 2000's TCHDC has provided year round out-of-school time programming for children in grades K-12 at it's two Resource Centers, Liberty Plaza in St. Paul and Calibre Ridge in Roseville. The Programs at Liberty Plaza are PLUS-TIme (Playful Learning with University Students) for children in K-4th grade and Youth VOICE for youth in grades 5-12th. The programs at Calibre Ridge are the Camp Fire Youth (k-5th) and Camp Fire Teen (6-12th) Programs. Over the years these programs have served over 2,000 children and youth who are members of families that live in TCHDC affordable housing communities.

The goals of our Resource Center programs and services are to:

1. Strengthen the economic self-sufficiency of resident families by supporting growth in employment and training services for adults

2. Improve academic achievement and self-confidence among children and youth

3. Help residents enhance the life skills necessary to be thriving member of society
