Water Quality Testing Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: Lower East Side Ecology Center

  • 6 people are interested

Be a water sampling volunteer for the Citizen's Water Quality Testing Program! We need volunteers to collect water samples at sites along the East River on Thursday mornings and deliver them to the testing facility.

The water samples are tested for enterococci bacteria, which are commonly found in the feces of humans and other warm-blooded animals; their presence in the water is an indication of fecal pollution and the possible presence of pathogens that could be harmful to human health.

The purpose of the program is to create a baseline of data that, when correlated with rain and tide information, can help better inform boaters and other recreational users of the harbor of likely water quality at their preferred access points and launch sites.

Mission Statement

The Lower East Side Ecology Center works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.

Description

The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.

The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
