Looking for a one-time volunteer opportunity? Volunteer at the 2017 Journeys event! Journeys is a collection of stories written by adult literacy students enrolled in English as a Second Language, GED, and basic skills classes across the state. Every year the Minnesota Literacy Council holds a Journeys reading and awards ceremony to showcase adult student writing and recognize adult literacy students, volunteers, and community partners for their outstanding achievements.
Volunteers are needed during the day and evening of this event. Shifts are 1-2 hours and run from 2:30-9:30 pm. Please take a look at the volunteer opportunities below. If you’re interested in helping out, please let Wendy know at wroberts@mnliteracy.org.

Journey Event Volunteer Roles
Event Set-up/Decorations (2:30-4:00 or 4:00-5:30pm): Put up signs; arrange tables and chairs; set up welcome table in the lobby; unpack supplies from cars.
Welcome Table (5:15-6:15pm or 6:15-7:15pm): Welcome readers, award winners and guests. Help direct readers/guests to the reading rooms and/or awards ceremony as appropriate.
Door Greeter (5:15-6:15pm): Help direct readers/guests to the reading rooms and/or awards ceremony as appropriate.
Reading Room Hosts (6:45-8:30pm): Help attendees find their seats. Stay in the reading room to listen and keep time for the readers. Hold up the "stop" sign after 3 minutes.
Reception/Food Service (7:00-9:00pm): Help set up and arrange food; serve and answer questions about food; help with food clean up.
Clean-up (8:30-9:30pm): Take down signs; pack up equipment and supplies and help load them into cars; clean up reception area and reading rooms; return tables and chairs to their original positions.

Founded in 1972, Literacy Minnesota is Minnesota's only non-profit, volunteer-based, education provider that operates statewide.
