PLACEMENT PURPOSE
Members of the Health Services function support the Red Cross as local and national disaster responders based on their professional license/certifications, required and recommended Red Cross training and the disaster responders' availability to donate time to the organization.
OPEN TIME DAYS
1-2 hours (average) per disaster response
Number of responses vary per month
REQUIRED TRAININGHS disaster responders are required to complete specific Red Cross training classes to work in the HS function.
(See the Competencies for Health Services Responders for the current list of required classes, attached below.)
Current Red Cross certification in CPR/AED/BBP for Rescuers and Health Care Providers is also required. The American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification will be accepted.
The following training is recommended for HS disaster responders to enhance their understanding of Red Cross service delivery to disaster clients.
- Psychological First Aid: Helping Others in Times of Stress
- Shelter Fundamentals
- Serving People with Functional and Access Needs in Shelters
- Client Assistance System: Basic, Create a Client Case, needsand Assistance
- ReadyRN
Any other disaster response training of interest to the disaster responders (Red Cross, FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency], VOAD [Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters], etc.)
Leadership positions within the HS function require additional training and field
experience. Check with your local chapter training representative for more
information.
During times of a large-scale event, webinars and on-the-job training during the
DRO may be substituted for the above requirements. Please consult national headquarters HS leadership at 202-303-5555 for these exceptions.
