The purpose of the volunteer Infant Safety Educator is to share information with parents and caregivers about prolonged infant crying and sleep safety in order to reduce the risks of infant abuse and accidental death.

The volunteer educator will:
1. Pick up a patient list.
2. Pick up tote bag with education supplies.
3. Visit infant (0-4 months) rooms. Introduce yourself to parent and explain the purpose of your visit.
4. View the 12- minute ThePeriod of PURPLE Crying video with parents on their TV or using the app.
5. Check to see if parents have any questions or follow up after watching the video. Encourage parents to share the video (app) with all the infant's relatives, caregivers, baby sitters, and anyone else caring for the infant.
6. Give the parents a purple hat or booties to help them remember their training.
7. Share Safe Sleep informational flier. Ask if they have any questions about it.
8. Document the visit and training provided by having parent/caregiver sign the acknowledgement form . Turn in the acknowledgement form to the unit secretary for check off in the patient's medical record.
9. Report any concerns to infant's nurse so they can follow up.
10. During down time, check all infant (0-12 months) rooms on the unit for compliance with Safe Sleep protocols. Report any issues to unit charge nurse.
11. Return the patient list to the volunteer office.

This volunteer placement reports to the nurse manager on the unit where they are volunteering.
