ORGANIZATION: The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands

  • 3 people are interested

If you have always wanted to volunteer for The Samaritans, but live too far from our center, have mobility or transportation concerns, then our Senior Outreach Program may be the perfect fit because you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

Our Senior Outreach Program pairs a Samaritan trained volunteer with a senior for weekly telephone calls. Seniors are referred to the program by Elder Services, Councils of Aging, Physicians, Friends, Family, or themselves because they are isolated, lonely, at risk for depression or anxiety, and would benefit from non-judgmental communication.

You will be trained in active listening techniques, and matched with a senior. You'll arrange a time that works for both you and your senior, and your number is always blocked. Calls range from 5 minutes to as long as you like.

We have ongoing Senior Outreach Training. We can even bring the two hour training to you! Come and join us and make a difference in the life of a great senior!

Mission Statement

The mission of The Samaritans is suicide prevention. A nonprofit organization with decades in volunteer public service and proven expertise in the field, The Samaritans provides support to people who are either contemplating suicide or who have been personally affected by suicide. Our focus is not solely on those people who are at imminent risk for suicide. Our goal is to provide pathways to healing for our whole community.

Description

We are a non-profit organization providing emotional support to those who are distressed, in crisis or suicidal through a non-judgmental, active listening approach called "befriending" with the goal of alleviating the person's despair, isolation and suicidal feelings. For volunteer opportunities or to inquire about our grief services program, please email us at griefservices@capesamaritans.org.

Our staff and volunteers answer calls on our hotlines 24/7/365 days a year.
