Del Paso Heights Community Garden
& Development Project

The Del Paso Heights Community Garden (DPHCG) has been providing fresh produce, gardening education, and cooking demonstrations for underserved residents of the community since 2014. Currently, DPHCG is in its first phase of a three-part development project. The one acre parcel of land where the garden resides will incorporate some of the following amenities: several garden beds (w/wheel-chair accessibility), an orchard, a greenhouse, a chicken coop, an aqua-ponic system, an outdoor amphitheater w/solar powered lighting, a children's garden, a farm stand and co-op ran by youth, and more things to come in the future.

Being that the community garden area is located within in a food desert, there are no true grocery stores in up to a two mile radius of the garden site (only liquor stores & gas stations). Given that many residents do not have reliable transportation, it can be difficult to find healthy and nutritious foods in much of the Del Paso Heights area. However, through the help of our community partners and supporters, the garden has grown over 2,000 pounds of fresh produce harvested in 2016. The garden has future plans to offer student educational credits and volunteer hours, work experience for those interested in developing a trade skill, and business management opportunities for youth through the DPHCG farm stand.

Importantly, staying connected to the community is what the garden is all about. In 2016-2017 a reserved amount of produce is given directly to our neighboring homeless population, most of which have volunteered at the Garden. DPHCG is a supporter of The Sacramento Food Bank and has provided a number of food donations from the garden to help those in need.
