CFC Families

At Child & Family Connections (CFC), we believe that work is most rewarding when it is aligned with the organization’s mission and the individual’s goals and interests.

CFC seeks 1-2 photographers to volunteer their time by taking photographs at our upcoming event May 11th to announce our SafeTogether program to the Philadelphia behavioral health and social services community.

The event will b e held at the Chart House Restaurant on Columbus Boulevard with about 75 guests and CFC's staff and board members, along with a parent with a mental illness who will be speaking about her experience raising children and the impact of custody loss on families.

We seek mostly candid photos but will also use the opportunity to take photos of Board Members, individually and as a group. Other focal points will be attendees, our speaker and her family, the room itself, and people having fun. Capturing the essence and the mood of the event is vital.

We can reimburse for transportation costs to/from the event, which also has free parking and is on the public transportation (SEPTA) route.

If the photos work well, there will be other opportunities for which we will need a talented photographer, if that is of interest in the future.

OUR MISSION & HISTORY

Child & Family Connections improves the lives of families living with parental mental illness in meaningful ways-through Peer-informed education, advocacy, and support.

When nine-year-old Charlotte asked to meet other kids who have a parent with a mental health condition, it was a milestone in a journey that began a decade earlier with her father’s institutionalization, destitution, and near-death from his bipolar disorder.

Inspired by her request, and with support from the Mental Health Association and the City of Philadelphia, he formed Child & Family Connections, Inc. (CFC) the nation’s first nonprofit that supports families living with parental mental illness. CFC’s Peer-informed, community-based solutions address the critical needs of these vulnerable families by giving families new knowledge, skills, and support that empower them to handle adversity and build resiliency. As a trusted resource for families, we are privileged to be a part of the process of helping them heal and Charlotte’s request continues to transform lives.

HOW WE WORK

Our staff all work virtually and have the flexibility to make their own hours. We come together in and out of the classroom in support of our programs. Our interns are a critical part of our team and are given significant levels of responsibility and can work around school schedules. If you have a favorite coffee shop where you’re comfortable working, no problem. CFC is founded on recovery principles of self-direction so the ability (and interest) to work independently is required. This lean model allows us to dedicate nearly all of our funding to help families at risk.

THE PROBLEM WE ARE SOLVING

In 2017, CFC begins development on our most important effort to date: a groundbreaking new program, the first of its kind in the U.S.-SafeTogether-to keep children in the home and out of foster care and the family intact during a parent’s psychiatric 'emergency’. This interactive program will head off the adverse effects of custody loss and the trauma of foster care in many families living with parental mental illness by keeping children in the home in the first place.

There is much work ahead as we hire partners to help with development, marketing, training, analytics, and more. We are just beginning curricula development and evaluation design to create the pilot program.

We’re looking forward to doing great things together!
