The City Tutors (CT) is looking for volunteer Math tutors to provide academic support to Children’s Aid Society's Next Generation Center at the corner of Southern Blvd and East 172nd street in the Bronx. We are currently seeking tutors to support students 18-24 years old as they prepare for the TASC, the new high school equivalency exam.
You would work with a group of students for 2 hours per week between 9am to noon. (You can do this on one day.) This is a great opportunity for students who are majoring (or have already earned a degree) in the course area to enhance their knowledge and experience, and who would like to leverage their knowledge in the subject area to support others with their learning growth and development. As a tutor, you will collaborate with a local coordinator to improve students’ performance while being supported and guided by experienced academic support professionals.
To apply, you must:
1. Have received an A- or A in the introduction to the subject course you are applying to tutor.
2. Have a GPA at or above 3.2, or have received a degree recently.
3. Be willing to complete 11.5 hours of College Reading and Learning Aligned (CRLA) training at City College of New York.
All tutors are also expected to complete a four session comprehensive, professional training regimen. 6 hours of live training, plus another hour and a half for orientation. This is a commitment of 7.5 hours of in person training, and 4 hours of supplemental training for a total of 11.5 hours of training over the course of the Spring semester.
We can accommodate your schedule for the live trainings.
CT's tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise would not have received, given their limited time spent on campus. Having tutors in these sessions early in the semester will allow us to employ strategies to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work with us would help the students’ overall subject area performance, and help us improve this educational support model, reaching more students and departments with comprehensive academic support.

About The City Tutors
160 Convent Ave, Shepard Hall 550, New York, NY 10031, US
The City Tutors mission is to use tutoring as a means to increase community engagement and cultivate community members' professional growth.
We are the tutoring program for CCNY's Colin Powell School and a community organization that serves programs across 4 of the 5 boroughs. Currently we provide in-class tutors to support adult education programs at 5 CUNY schools, including CCNY, BMCC, LaGuardia, City Tech, and Hostos (and its extension campus, CUNY in the Heights). We are also partnered with five non-profits that provide high school equivalency support to the populations they serve: Childrens Aid Society, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corp, Henry Street Settlement, Goddard Riverside Community Center, and (through the Department of Youth and Community Development) Moshulu Montefiore Community Center. Outside of adult education, we work with housing projects, high schools, and a nano-tech lab. For most of our opportunities, we put tutors in classrooms where they are collaborating with an instructor to support students. We also do one-to-one and small group tutoring. We tailor the support to the needs of the site. We are a great place to tutor if you are in college, a working professional or a retired professional.
We'll work with your schedule.
