EVENT DESCRIPTION:

This is a community workshop open to all families in Boston. Parents and children will attend together. The event will open with some whole-group activities that incorporate drama and play with storytelling. Later, parents and children will break into separate groups. Parents will work with Raising a Reader MA staff to incorporate dramatic play into their at-home reading routines, while the children will work with volunteers to create puppets and large backdrops. The puppets and backdrops will be used by the parents as they put on a show for the whole group at the end of the workshop. Food will be shared, and each participant will leave with the gift of a book.

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING:

Before 5 p.m., volunteers will be helping to set up the event. From 5:00 to 5:15, volunteers would be supporting workshop sign-in. After that, volunteers will guide craft projects with the children. Sample art projects, instructions, and guidance will be provided for volunteers at the event!

We understand the timing of this event is tough at the end of a work day, but we appreciate anyone who might be able to join us! It is ok if you are not able to arrive until 5:00 pm.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Volunteers should love reading, interacting with other community members, and not be afraid to get a little silly.

WHERE TO MEET:

There is limited street parking available near the library. The nearest MBTA stop is the Airport station on the Blue Line. Meet at the main circulation desk inside the East Boston Public Library, located at 365 Bremen St, Boston, MA 02128. The Event Manager will contact all volunteers closer to the event with information on where to meet.

RAISING A READER: Raising A Reader MA is an evidence-based early literacy organization that helps families of young children (newborn to age 5) develop, practice, and maintain habits of reading with their young children at home. Our core program model, which both increases access to books and offers families tools and supports for strengthening the culture of reading at home, is driven by 25 years of research that show the most significant factor impacting a childs academic success is being regularly read to by a parent or other primary adult caregiver before starting kindergarten. The goal of Raise A Reader is to end the cycle of low literacy by helping families across Massachusetts develop high impact home reading routines that lay the groundwork for a lifetime of learning, success, and productive, responsible citizenship

Mission Statement

One Brick provides support to local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. We enable people to get involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Description

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, One Brick is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings volunteers together to support other local non-profits by adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event -- which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours -- we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or caf where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting.

Our 'commitment-free volunteering' allows you to choose when you volunteer, rather than having to make commitments for a certain number of volunteer hours, or agree to be available every week at a specific time.
