Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival is an international exposition of living cultural heritage in Washington, D.C., produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

GET INVOLVED: Volunteers are needed before, during, and after the Festival. They assist stage managers, help with audiovisual recording of per­formances, work with participants, support sustainability efforts, and much more. You must be 16 years or older to apply. Join us for what promises to be an extraordinary ten days filled with creativity, culture, and community.

VOLUNTEER HOURS 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. (days) and 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. (evenings)

Through research, curation, live programs, and digital storytelling, the Festival communicates an unwavering commitment to representing diverse cultures as a positive force for cultural equity, inclusivity, and the common good.

Description

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is an international exposition of living cultural heritage annually produced outdoors on the National Mall of the United States in Washington, D.C., by the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

The Festival takes place for two weeks every summer overlapping the Fourth of July holiday. It is an educational presentation that features community-based cultural exemplars. Free to the public, like other Smithsonian museums, each Festival typically draws hundreds of thousands of visitors.
